August 2011
Dear Friends,
We all know the importance and power of our spoken words. Our words, the language that we use, help us to convey our thoughts, our feelings, our beliefs, and yes, our faith. This is why we must reflect carefully on the words we use and how we use them. In short, this is why our words carry such power and importance.
On the first Sunday of Advent 2011 (November 27, 2011) there will be changes in the language that we use at Mass. All the English speaking countries throughout the world will be using new language to appropriately reflect our beliefs. At the same time, it will unite us with all of the non-English speaking countries throughout the world. In Advent 2011 – the Church throughout the world will be using the same words at Mass, albeit, in the respective language of each country.
The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has approved the use of the new Mass parts beginning September 1, 2011. Therefore, parts of the Mass like the Gloria, the Sanctus (Holy, Holy, Holy), the Lamb of God, etc. will be done with the new language. The Mass parts we will be using initially will be taken from the Roman Missal, which is the same book that I use when I celebrate Mass. Since this Mass setting is the basic one and the one that will be used in other places, I feel it is best to start with that and then, in time, learn a few other Mass settings. This booklet contains this new Mass setting and we can use it as a reference as we begin praying with this new translation.
You will notice that this will be different for us as it will be for every parish community. As always, I ask for your patience and understanding. Change is not always easy, but if we do it together in a constructive way – we will make it though and see the benefits! I feel this is an exciting time for our Church. These changes will help the Universal Church to proclaim to the world, with one voice that – “JESUS CHRIST IS LORD!”
Peace,
Reverend John D. Manno
