Oxford Inn
The Oxford Street Inn located on Midland Avenue is a homeless men’s shelter run by Catholic Charities. There are 110 – 120 men seeking shelter at the Inn from 5PM to 7AM, 365 days a year. We provide numerous weekly, monthly and seasonal ministries that address some of the basic needs of those who find themselves homeless. We also provide a ministry of presence in which individuals visit the men, help identify specific needs that we may be able to assist. This ministry provides the potential of building trust and relationships that can help promote change in their lives.
For three years we have marked Holy Week at the shelter with Washing of Feet on Holy Thursday. Priests, seminarians and parishioners from various churches participate in this very moving and sacred ministry. Churches and organizations that have collaborated with St. James in providing and supporting these and many more ministries are: Holy Cross Church and School, Immaculate Conception Church, Holy Family Church, St. Anthony’s Church, St. Lucy’s, Our Lady of Lourdes, Onondaga Valley Presbyterian Church, St. Paul’s Methodist Church and Onondaga Community College.

Loaves & Fishes Ministry
A newly developing ministry with the help of a McDevitt Parish Grant Award for Food Pantry/Food Bank needs which St. James received June 15, 2011 from the Diocese of Syracuse. This ministry will help supplement the grocery needs of men from the Oxford Street Inn, who have recently been placed in Catholic Charities housing. Often government food stamps and assistance does not provide enough for food to get these men through to the end of the month. We will develop a process in which particularly needy men will be identified to receive a bag of groceries every month.

Southside Outreach
Throughout the year we have opportunities to reach out to neighborhoods on the South Side, while developing relationships through dialogue and service. Understanding their needs allows us to better serve while bringing the presence of Christ to others. These avenues of outreach include free hot dog cookouts and distributing popsicles to inner city children. During the winter months we bring coffee, soup, socks, hats and gloves to homeless people living in camps and under bridges. Many of these outreach efforts are done in collaboration with parishioners from Holy Cross Church in Dewitt, St. Lucy’s, St. Anthony’s, Our Lady of Lourdes in Syracuse and Onondaga Valley Presbyterian Church.
